Testing you can watch, start to finish
At Canada Gold Surrey, every test happens at the counter so you can see each step. We explain what we are doing, show you the reading and invite questions along the way. The goal is simple. Clear testing protects you and it protects us, so the offer we make is based on facts everyone can see.
Step 1: Quick checks and sorting
We begin with a visual inspection and a magnet pass. Real gold is not magnetic, so a strong magnet helps flag clasps, chains, or findings that may contain steel or other metals. We group items by hallmark and by what they appear to be so you can follow the process piece by piece.
Step 2: Touchstone confirmation
If an item is suitable for touchstone, we rub a tiny streak of metal on a testing stone and apply mild acids that correspond to different karats. The streak stays or dissolves depending on purity. You will see the reaction happen in real time. We keep the contact small and discreet, and we avoid rubbing any area that would affect the look of the piece.
Step 3: XRF analysis
Next we can use XRF, a non-destructive scanner that reads the elemental makeup of the metal. The result shows the percentage of gold along with other metals in the alloy. It is quick and does not remove material. We will explain the screen so you know what the numbers mean before we talk about value.
Why this protects both sides
Seeing the test eliminates guesswork. If a piece is stamped 22K but tests lower, you will see the proof. If it reads higher than expected, you will see that too. The method prevents overpaying or underpaying, and it gives you a record of how we arrived at the karat and weight that go into the payout calculation.
When we will not test
If a piece looks like it may be damaged by touchstone or if it contains sensitive finishes, we will pause and discuss options. For delicate items we rely on XRF and visual assessment first. If a gem is set in a way that blocks accurate readings, we will explain the limitation and adjust the approach.
Your role in the process
Bring everything as you found it. Keep hallmarked parts together if possible. Ask to see each step and take notes if you like. You should leave with confidence that your offer reflects the metal you brought in and the results you watched us confirm.
